It sounds like the most touristy thing on this list — a boater-hatted guide poling you down a river in a flat-bottomed boat — and honestly, that’s exactly what it is. It’s also one of the nicest half-hours you’ll spend in Christchurch. The Avon (Ōtākaro) winds right through the middle of the city, and gliding along it in near-silence is a completely different way to see the rebuild.
Where to get on
- Antigua Boat Sheds: the classic starting point, on the edge of the Botanic Gardens
- Worcester Bridge: a central-city route past Te Pae, the Christchurch Town Hall, Victoria Square and Margaret Mahy Playground
Heads up: the Worcester Bridge site is currently closed and set to reopen in spring 2026, so check which departure point is running before you plan your day. Punts seat up to six people, and it’s worth booking ahead — timeslots fill up fast in peak season.
What you’ll see
Depending on your route, you’ll drift past the Botanic Gardens, under willow-lined banks, and through the heart of the rebuilt central city — a nice contrast to walking the same streets at ground level. Your punter usually shares a bit of history and local knowledge along the way, so it’s not just a pretty ride, it’s a decent orientation to the city too.
Bundle it to save
Punting, the Gondola and the Tram are all run by Christchurch Attractions, so grab a combo ticket if you’re doing more than one — it’s cheaper than booking separately, and you probably should be doing all three anyway.
Campervan tip
Both punting sites have parking nearby or are an easy walk from the central city, so this slots in perfectly with a Botanic Gardens visit if you’re already based around Christchurch for a day or two. Go mid-morning before the wind picks up — the water’s stillest early in the day.
