If you land in Christchurch with no plan at all, get on the tram first. It’s the single easiest way to get your bearings — a heritage loop through the central city with commentary, hop-on-hop-off stops, and zero effort required.
The basics
- Route: a loop of 17 stops through the central city
- Highlights along the way: Cathedral Square, the Botanic Gardens, the Arts Centre, New Regent Street’s pastel shopfronts, and the riverside
- Format: hop on and off as many times as you like on your ticket, so it doubles as transport between attractions
Why it’s worth it
Christchurch has changed more than almost any city in New Zealand since the 2011 earthquakes, and the tram commentary does a genuinely good job of explaining what you’re looking at — what used to be there, what’s new, and why. It’s a much better way to understand the rebuild than just walking past it. Stop 10 is right by the Worcester Bridge punting site, and stop 16 is the best drop-off for Margaret Mahy Playground, so it links up neatly with the rest of this list.

Combine it with the Gondola (and punting, if you’ve got time) through Christchurch Attractions’ combo tickets — cheaper than booking each one separately, and locals can get an annual Tram and Gondola pass for around $69, or a day pass around $50.
Campervan tip
Parking in the central city can be fiddly, so this is a good one to do on foot — hop on the tram near wherever you’ve parked up around Christchurch, ride the full loop once just to see everything, then hop off at whichever stop matches your next stop on this list.
