Named after the beloved Kiwi children’s author, Margaret Mahy Playground is one of the best things to come out of the Christchurch rebuild — and it’s completely free. At over two hectares, it’s the largest playground in the Southern Hemisphere, and it’s genuinely fun for adults too, not just kids.
What’s there
- A giant slide big enough for the whole family to ride abreast
- A flying fox for racing
- Water channels and play features (bring a towel and a change of clothes in summer)
- Climbing structures, swings, sand play and quieter areas for younger kids
It’s built right alongside the Avon (Ōtākaro), just a couple of blocks from Cathedral Square, so it’s easy to fold into a central-city day even if you’re not travelling with kids.
Getting there
If you’re riding the Christchurch Tram, stop 16 on New Regent Street is the closest drop-off. It’s also a natural stop if you’re punting from the Worcester Bridge site — the route passes right by it.
Good to know
It gets busy on weekends and school holidays, especially the water features in warmer months. If you want it quieter, aim for a weekday morning. There’s no entry fee, no booking required — just turn up.
Campervan tip
This is the easiest “free half-day” to slot into any Christchurch itinerary. If you’re travelling with kids around Christchurch, let them burn off energy here before an afternoon of quieter sightseeing — everyone sleeps better in the van that night.
