Franz Josef is one of the few places in the world where a glacier flows down almost to sea level through temperate rainforest — and you can see it without spending a cent. The village is touristy and the heli-hikes are pricey, but the headline view is free.
The free walk
The Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk is the move: an easy-to-moderate track from the car park (free parking!) along the glacial riverbed to a viewpoint looking up at the ice. It’s roughly 1.5 hours return, open year-round, and it runs through a dramatic valley of cliffs, waterfalls and rainforest. Check the DOC alert before you go — it closes in heavy rain or for maintenance, and you must stay behind the barriers (the terminal face is genuinely dangerous).

- Sentinel Rock: Short, steep, great elevated view of the glacier.
- Lake Wombat and Peters Pool: Quiet forest walks with mirror reflections of the mountains on a still day.
- Callery Gorge / Tatare Tunnels: Glowworms in old water-race tunnels — bring a torch.
Splurge option
A heli-hike or scenic flight actually puts you on the ice and is genuinely spectacular if your budget allows.
Camping
Use the holiday parks in the village and nearby DOC sites; freedom camping is restricted here, so check CamperMate and signage.
