Thirty minutes south of Franz Josef, Fox Glacier is the slightly quieter twin — same jaw-dropping “glacier in a rainforest” setup, usually with fewer people. And it has a secret weapon just down the road.
The free glacier walk
The Fox Glacier Valley Walk (the South Side Walkway) leads through lush rainforest and along the valley floor to the official viewpoint — the best free view of the glacier without a helicopter. Parking is free and the area’s open year-round, but always check the DOC alert first: this valley is prone to closures from rockfall and weather, and you must stay behind the barriers.
The lake you can’t miss
Lake Matheson, a few minutes from the village, is one of NZ’s most photographed spots. On a still morning the dark, tannin-stained water perfectly mirrors Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. The loop walk is easy (about 1.5 hours), free, and best at dawn before the wind picks up. Pure magic with a coffee.
Hidden gem
Gillespies Beach, down a gravel road past Fox, is a wild, remote black-sand beach with a seal colony and almost nobody around — proper end-of-the-world West Coast vibes.
