Golden Bay: Over the Hill to New Zealand’s Most Laid-Back Corner

To reach Golden Bay you have to drive over Tākaka Hill, a long, winding, switchbacking pass that acts like a filter — it keeps the crowds out and the good vibes in. On the other side is a sun-trap of golden beaches, clear springs, artists, organic cafés and some of the friendliest, most alternative communities in the country.

Don’t miss

  • Te Waikoropupū Springs: Among the clearest freshwater springs on Earth — you can see for 60+ metres through the water. It’s a sacred (wāhi tapu) site, so no swimming or touching the water; just walk the loop and be amazed. Free.
  • Wharariki Beach: Wild dunes, arches and the iconic rock islands (yes, the Windows wallpaper one). Watch for seal pups in the rock pools. A 20-minute walk in from the car park.
  • Pōhara and Tata Beach: Calm, golden, swimmable.

Hidden gem

The Grove Scenic Reserve near Pōhara is a strange, beautiful maze of limestone outcrops and rātā roots — short, free, and almost empty.

The vibe

Tākaka and Collingwood (separate posts) are the hubs. Expect markets, live music, and a slower clock. It’s the kind of place backpackers come for two days and leave a week later.

Camping

Tasman District allows no tent freedom camping; self-contained vans can use designated sites (Pōhara, Patons Rock and others). Check CamperMate and signage, and carry a Green Warrant.

Golden Bay rewards slow travel — exactly what a self-contained Campervanz van is for.
