Hokitika is a small, arty West Coast town that punches well above its weight for backpackers — partly because two of its best experiences are completely free, and one of them happens after dark.
Free things to do
- Hokitika Gorge: About 30 minutes inland, this is the big one — astonishing milky-turquoise water (that glacial rock flour again) below a swing bridge and short forest loop. Free, easy, unforgettable.
- Glowworm Dell: On the edge of town, walk into a dark grotto after sunset and the banks light up with hundreds of glowworms. Completely free — bring no torch, let your eyes adjust.
- Hokitika Beach: Driftwood sculptures, the giant white “HOKITIKA” sign, and some of the best sunsets on the coast.
Pounamu (greenstone)
Hokitika is the heart of NZ pounamu (jade/greenstone) carving, which is deeply significant in Māori culture. You can watch carvers at work and learn the stories behind the stone.
Hidden gem
Lake Kaniere and Dorothy Falls, on the way to the gorge, are a peaceful, swimmable detour almost nobody bothers with.
