You’ll have seen the photo before you ever see the place: a tiny stone church on the shore of a lake so blue it looks fake. Lake Tekapo gets its colour from “rock flour” — glacial dust suspended in the meltwater — and it really is that intense in real life, especially in sunshine.
Free things to do
- Church of the Good Shepherd: The famous little stone church right on the water. Free to walk around (be respectful — it’s still a working church).
- Lupins in late spring: Around November/December the lakeshore explodes with purple and pink lupins. Peak postcard.
- Mt John summit walk: A loop up through pine forest to a café-topped summit with 360° views over the whole basin. Free if you walk (small fee to drive up).
- Tekapo hot springs: Paid, but a lovely soak with a lake view.
Stargazing
Tekapo sits in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, just lie back by the lake — or splurge on an observatory tour at Mt John, one of the best in the world.
Camping — read this
Freedom camping is prohibited in Tekapo township and along the lakefront. Don’t risk it — rangers patrol and fines are steep. Use the holiday park, or head to designated self-contained areas around Lake Pukaki and DOC sites further out. Max stays apply, and you’ll need a Green Warrant.
