If one place on the South Island makes everyone go quiet, it’s Aoraki / Mt Cook. New Zealand’s highest mountain (3,724 m) sits at the end of a valley ringed by glaciers, and the drive in — past the unreal blue of Lake Pukaki — is one of the great approaches on Earth. Best of all, the headline experience here is completely free.
The walk you can’t skip
The Hooker Valley Track is the one. Three swing bridges, a flat and easy 3-hour return walk, and at the end a glacial lake with icebergs floating in it and Aoraki towering behind. It’s suitable for almost anyone and it’s the best free walk in the country. Go early or near sunset for the light.

Stargazing
The whole area is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve — one of the best places on the planet for stars. Step outside the van at night and the Milky Way is genuinely shocking.
Camping
The DOC White Horse Hill Campground near the trailheads is basic, scenic and cheap — first-come, first-served. Freedom camping in the wider Mackenzie is tightly controlled and self-contained only, so use DOC sites and check the rules.
