If Tekapo made your jaw drop, Lake Pukaki finishes the job. It’s bigger, even bluer, and on a clear day Aoraki / Mt Cook sits perfectly framed at the far end. The main highway runs right along it, so the views are constant — but it’s worth pulling off and just sitting with it for a while.
Free things to do
- Lakefront viewpoints: Multiple pull-offs along SH8 with the mountain framed by water. The southern end near the visitor centre is the classic shot.
- Salmon shack: The high-country salmon farm sells fresh sashimi-grade salmon for a few dollars — a legendary cheap backpacker lunch with a million-dollar view.
- Drive to Mt Cook: From here it’s a 45-minute dead-straight drive up the western shore to the Hooker Valley — one of the best short drives in NZ.
Hidden gem
Most people shoot the southern viewpoint and leave. Drive up Hayman Road along the quieter western shore for the same colour, the mountain, and far fewer people.
Camping — the good news
Unlike Tekapo, Pukaki has designated self-contained freedom camping along parts of the shoreline (around the southern overnight area and Hayman Road), usually max three nights. Spots fill in summer and rules change, so confirm on CamperMate, watch for signs, and make sure your van has a Green Warrant.
