A couple of hours up the coast from Christchurch, Kaikoura is one of those rare places where snow-capped mountains rise straight out of the sea. A deep ocean trench sits just offshore, which is why marine life is everywhere here — sperm whales year-round, dolphins, fur seals, and seabirds.
Free things to do
- Point Kean seal colony: Wild fur seals lounging on the rocks at the end of the peninsula, completely free. Keep 10 metres back — they bite and they’re faster than they look.
- Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway: A stunning 3–4 hour clifftop and shore loop past seal colonies and old Māori pā sites. The best free thing in town.
- Watch from shore: You can often spot dolphins and seabirds without paying for a tour.
Worth the money
If you splurge once on the South Island, a whale-watching or swim-with-dolphins trip here is the one. Sperm whales are basically resident.
Eat this
Kaikoura literally means “meal of crayfish.” Grab some from a roadside seafood caravan north of town — pricey but iconic.
Camping — read carefully
Kaikoura is strict: freedom camping is self-contained vehicles only, max one night in the same spot per four-week period, and only in the five council-run sites (like West End car park and Jimmy Armers Beach).
