Christchurch is one of the world’s gateway cities to Antarctica — it’s where the US, NZ and Italian Antarctic programs are based — and the International Antarctic Centre is the closest most of us will ever get to the ice without an eye-watering expedition budget.

Why it works for all ages
The penguin viewing is calm enough for toddlers, while the Storm Room and Hagglund ride give older kids (and adults) something with a bit more adrenaline. It’s a genuinely well-designed few hours that doesn’t feel like a school trip.
Practical info
It’s located near Christchurch Airport, a short drive from the central city — easy to combine with an airport pickup or drop-off day if your dates line up. Give yourself two to three hours to see it properly.
Campervan tip
Because it’s out near the airport rather than central, this is a good one to pair with your first or last day picking up or dropping off your van around Christchurch — no need for a dedicated trip into town.
