If you only do one “up high” activity in Christchurch, make it the Gondola. Ten minutes up the Port Hills gets you a panorama most cities would kill for: the whole Canterbury Plains running out to the Southern Alps on one side, and Lyttelton Harbour and Banks Peninsula on the other.
What to expect
- Ride time: around 10 minutes each way, gliding up to the Mt Cavendish summit
- At the top: a revamped summit complex (rebuilt since the 2011 earthquake) with a café, a short history walk about the Port Hills, and viewing platforms
- Price: return tickets are around $42 for an adult, but it’s worth checking the combo options first
Bundle it to save
The Gondola, the historic Tram and Punting on the Avon are all run by the same operator, Christchurch Attractions, and they sell combo tickets — the more you add, the more you save. If you’re planning to do all three (and you should, they’re all on this list), book the combo rather than paying for each separately. Locals can also grab an annual pass for the Gondola and Tram, which is a good deal if you’ll be back in Christchurch more than once.
Getting there
The Gondola base station is about a 20-minute drive from the central city, or you can catch public bus #8 towards Lyttelton, which drops you right outside. There’s also usually a shuttle running from the city centre in peak season.
Campervan tip
There’s parking at the Gondola base station, so it’s an easy stop to add onto a loop day around Christchurch — pair it with a coffee at the summit café and you’ve got a relaxed half-day sorted. Go late afternoon if you can; the light over the Alps at golden hour is unbeatable.
