Top 5 Day Hikes on the South Island (No Multi-Day Commitment Needed)

Not everyone has time (or budget) for a multi-day Great Walk. Good news: some of the best views on the South Island are reachable in a single day, and most of these are free. Here are our five favourites, from easy to lung-busting.

1. Hooker Valley Track (Aoraki/Mt Cook) — Easy

The best easy walk in NZ. Flat, ~3 hours return, three swing bridges, and a glacial lake with icebergs right under the highest peak in the country. Anyone can do it. See our Aoraki post.

2. Key Summit (Fiordland) — Easy/Moderate

The start of the Routeburn, done as a 3-hour return day walk to alpine tarns and 360° Fiordland views. The best bite-sized taste of a Great Walk. On the Milford Road.

3. Roys Peak (Wānaka) — Hard

The famous one: a relentless 5–6 hour return climb to that knife-edge ridge viewpoint over Lake Wānaka. Tough but iconic. Go early to beat the heat and the queue for the photo.

4. Ben Lomond (Queenstown) — Hard

A big 6–8 hour return summit climb straight from town (take the Tiki Trail up) for a jaw-dropping panorama over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables.

5. Avalanche Peak (Arthur’s Pass) — Very Hard

For experienced hikers only: a steep, exposed alpine climb with one of the most rewarding summits on the island. Check DOC alerts and weather — this one is serious and not for beginners.

Before you go

Carry water, layers and a charged phone; mountain weather flips fast. Always check the DOC track page for alerts the morning you head out.

A Campervanz van parks you right near the trailheads — start at sunrise, finish at the van.
