The South Island isn’t the first place people think of for surfing — which is exactly why it’s so good. Cold water keeps the crowds away, so if you’ve got a decent wetsuit (4/3 minimum, booties help) you can score quality waves with barely anyone out. Here are five to chase.
1. Kaikoura
Beautiful setup with surf breaks below snow-capped mountains. Mangamaunu, just north of town, is a long right-hand point break that’s a South Island classic. Mountains + sea + waves = unreal.
2. Christchurch (Sumner & Taylors Mistake)
The easiest spots to surf near a city. Sumner is great for beginners; Taylors Mistake is a pretty bay that picks up more swell. Perfect if you’re starting your trip in Christchurch.
3. Dunedin (St Clair & Aramoana)
Dunedin is the South Island’s surf city. St Clair is a consistent beach break right by town; Aramoana (“The Spit”) is a famous, powerful left when it’s on (experienced surfers only).
4. The Catlins (Curio Bay / Porpoise Bay)
Wild, remote and gorgeous — and you might share the lineup with rare Hector’s dolphins. Keep a respectful distance from the wildlife; this is their home first.
5. Westport / West Coast
The West Coast is raw and powerful with serious swell and far fewer surfers. Tauranga Bay near Westport is a good starting point. Conditions are heavier here — know your limits.
Cold-water tips
- Wetsuit: 4/3 with booties year-round; add gloves and a hood in winter.
- Safety: Rips, cold and remoteness are real. Surf with others and check conditions.
- Respect locals and wildlife — seals and dolphins are common.
A Campervanz van is the ultimate surf rig — chase swell up the coast and sleep where you score.
