Tākaka is the main village of Golden Bay and one of the most characterful little towns in New Zealand — a single main street full of cafés, galleries, wholefood shops and people who very much do their own thing. If you like your travel relaxed, barefoot and a bit alternative, you’ll love it.
Things to do
- Swim at the Tākaka River and Pupu Springs area: Crystal-clear water and quiet swimming spots.
- Labyrinth Rocks: A free, quirky maze of mossy limestone passages with little toys hidden throughout — weirdly delightful.
- Rawhiti Cave: A steep but rewarding free walk to a huge cave mouth dripping with stalactites and rare “phototropic” formations.
- Markets and music: The Saturday market and the legendary Mussel Inn (try the Captain Cooker manuka beer) are the social heart of the bay.
Hidden gem
Locals’ swimming holes along the Waikoropupū and Tākaka rivers are clear, cold and uncrowded — ask at a café and someone will point you to their favourite.
Use it as a base
Tākaka is perfectly placed for Abel Tasman, Te Waikoropupū Springs, and the wild beaches further north toward Collingwood and Cape Farewell.
Camping
Self-contained vans can use designated Tākaka-area sites; no tent freedom camping in the Tasman District. Check CamperMate and the signs.
