It’s New Zealand’s white-water capital, surrounded by gorges and clear green rivers, and it has the kind of slow, friendly, middle-of-nowhere energy you came here for.

- Kayaking and rafting: Murchison is a legendary spot to learn white-water kayaking, with schools running multi-day courses for beginners. The Buller Gorge nearby is world-class.
- Buller Gorge Swingbridge: New Zealand’s longest swingbridge, with a zipline back across if you fancy it.
- Maruia Falls: A wide, powerful waterfall that only formed after the 1929 earthquake — quick stop, big payoff.
- River swimming: On a hot day the rivers here are unreal — cold, clear and green.
Hidden gem
The drive west from Murchison through the Buller Gorge to Westport is one of the most underrated on the island: cliffs, river, native bush, almost no traffic.
