Way down south on Stewart Island (Rakiura), the Rakiura Track is the most relaxed and remote of the South Island’s Great Walks — a 32 km, 3-day loop through coastal forest and along quiet beaches. The big draw? This is one of the best places in NZ to see wild kiwi, including in daylight.
The basics
- Distance: ~32 km, 3 days / 2 nights, loop track.
- Difficulty: Easier and lower than the alpine Great Walks — muddy but gentle.
- Getting there: Ferry (or small plane) from Bluff, near Invercargill, to Oban. Leave the van in Bluff.
Booking & season
It’s a year-round track, but you still book huts/campsites through DOC. 2026/27 bookings opened 21 May 2026. It’s less of a scramble than the Milford or Kepler, but still book ahead in summer.
Why it’s special
- Wild kiwi: Stewart Island has a big population and they’re active day and night — your best shot anywhere.
- Birdsong: With predator control and nearby Ulva Island (a free-ish day trip and predator-free sanctuary), the birdlife is extraordinary.
- Total peace: 85% of the island is national park. This is the quiet, wild end of New Zealand.
What to bring
Good rain gear and footwear for mud, plus food. Check DOC alerts and ferry schedules.
