Fiordland National Park is the biggest national park in New Zealand and one of the last great wildernesses on Earth — over a million hectares of fiords, glacier-carved valleys, rainforest and waterfalls, much of it never touched by roads. This is the dramatic, moody, soul-stirring NZ of the postcards (and yes, it rains a lot — that’s why there are so many waterfalls).
Your base: Te Anau
The lakeside town of Te Anau is the gateway and a great backpacker base. Free or cheap things here:
- Lakefront walk and the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary (free, donation appreciated) — see the rare flightless takahē.
- Kepler Track day-walk: You can walk the first scenic section from the control gates for free (the full track is a Great Walk — see its own post).
The Milford Road (don’t rush it)
The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the greatest roads anywhere, and it’s lined with free short walks: Lake Gunn Nature Walk, Mirror Lakes, Key Summit, Lake Marian, and The Chasm (note: The Chasm is partly closed for repairs until ~September 2026 — check DOC). Allow a whole day for the drive itself.
Big picture
Fiordland is also home to Doubtful Sound (wilder and quieter than Milford) and epic multi-day tramps. Whatever you do, check the DOC alerts — weather closes roads and tracks here regularly, and avalanche risk is real in winter/spring.
Camping
DOC campsites line the Milford Road (e.g. Cascade Creek) — basic, scenic, often first-come. Freedom camping is restricted; check DOC and CamperMate, carry a Green Warrant.
Fiordland rewards the unhurried — a Campervanz van lets you chase the weather windows and stop at every waterfall.
