Just 15 minutes from Wānaka, Lake Hāwea is what Wānaka might have been before the Instagram crowds — a deep, intensely blue alpine lake ringed by mountains, with a tiny township and a whole lot of calm. If you want the scenery without the bustle, come here.
Things to do
- The Hāwea lookout: The viewpoint as you come over the hill from Wānaka is a stunner — pull over and take it in.
- Lakefront and dam walk: Easy, flat strolls with massive mountain reflections on a still day.
- Swimming: The water is clear, cold and gorgeous in summer. The grassy lakefront is a perfect lazy afternoon.
- Timaru River / Hāwea River: Good spots for a wild swim or a riverside walk.
Hidden gem
The drive north along the lake toward The Neck (the narrow strip of land between Lakes Hāwea and Wānaka) gives you both lakes at once and some of the best roadside views in Otago — almost nobody stops.
Why backpackers like it
It’s quieter, cheaper-feeling and more local than Wānaka, but close enough to use everything Wānaka offers. A lovely place to slow down for a night.
