Just 20 minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown is a perfectly preserved 1860s gold-mining village — tree-lined streets, tiny stone cottages and a real sense of history. It’s a lovely, cheap half-day escape from Queenstown’s adrenaline machine, and in autumn (April–May) it turns into a riot of gold and red leaves that draws photographers from all over.
Free things to do
- Pan for gold in the Arrow River: People still find tiny flecks. Buy or borrow a pan, find a gravel bank, and have a go — free fun with a chance of treasure.
- Chinese Settlement: A free, moving heritage site of restored huts telling the story of the Chinese miners who were treated brutally during the rush. Important history, beautifully done.
- Arrow River Trail: Walk or cycle along the river through golden poplars.
- Tobins Track: A steeper climb for big views over the basin.
Hidden gem
Follow the back road toward Macetown (4WD or bike/walk) into the old goldfields — wild, empty country that feels lost in time.
Eat and drink
The historic main street has good cafés and one of NZ’s most famous tiny pubs. Cheaper and far more relaxed than central Queenstown.

Arrowtown is a perfect low-key day from a Campervanz base near Queenstown — especially in autumn.
