Tucked into the mountains about 90 minutes north of Christchurch, Hanmer Springs is a little alpine village famous for one thing: its thermal hot pools. The pools are paid (and worth it after a few days in the van), but there’s plenty of free nature around to earn the soak first.
Free things to do
- Conical Hill Walkway: A short, sharp climb straight from the village to a 360° lookout. About an hour return.
- Hanmer Forest trails: A whole network of walking and mountain-biking tracks through tall pines and redwoods, all free.
- Waiau Ferry Bridge: Bungy and a deep gorge if you want to watch other people be brave.
- Woodland and Mount Isobel walks: For a bigger half-day push with alpine views.
Hidden gem
Just out of town, the Maruia and Lewis Pass area on the way west is one of the most underrated drives on the island — beech forest, the Sylvia Flat hot springs (natural, free, in the river), and barely any traffic.
The soak
The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools are the main event — a maze of hot pools at different temperatures. Go late afternoon when the day-trippers leave.
Camping
Hanmer Springs has a self-contained-vehicles-only freedom camping spot, max four nights, usable 5pm–9am. Outside that, use the holiday park or a nearby DOC site. Always confirm on CamperMate before you settle in.
