Christchurch to Queenstown by Campervan: 10 Must-See Stops

The Christchurch to Queenstown drive is one of New Zealand’s classic road trips. The direct route takes about 4.5 hours — but nobody does it in one go. Spread across 4-7 days and you have one of the most rewarding drives in the country. Here are 10 stops worth making.

1. Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora (1 hour south of Christchurch)

Most people drive straight past, but this shallow coastal lagoon is one of the largest in New Zealand and an excellent birdwatching spot. The drive along Hawke’s Bay Road has big sky views and almost no traffic. A quiet first stop to ease into the trip.

2. Geraldine (2 hours south)

A small town that punches above its weight. Good bakeries, a surprisingly good art gallery, and the Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve nearby for a short walk. The kind of place you spend an hour and don’t regret it. Stock up on local produce at the Barker’s Fruit Winery if you’re passing.

3. Lake Tekapo (3 hours south)

One of the most photographed places in New Zealand — and justified. The turquoise colour of the lake is real (glacial flour suspended in the water). The Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakeshore is worth the short walk. At night, the Mackenzie Basin has some of the darkest skies in the country — the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Stay a night if you can.

4. Lake Pukaki and the Mount Cook Road (3.5 hours south)

At the southern end of Lake Tekapo, take State Highway 8 south and then turn onto the Mount Cook Road. The lake here is even more vivid than Tekapo — a deep turquoise with Aoraki/Mount Cook visible at the end of the valley on clear days. The drive up to Mount Cook Village takes about an hour and is one of the most dramatic in New Zealand.

5. Aoraki/Mount Cook Village (4.5 hours from Christchurch)

New Zealand’s highest mountain (3,724m) and one of its great hiking destinations. The Hooker Valley Track is a 3-hour return walk to a glacier lake with a face-on view of Aoraki — one of the best easy walks in the country. The DOC campsite here is well-equipped and not expensive.

6. Omarama (5 hours from Christchurch)

A small town at the junction of the Mackenzie Basin and the Waitaki Valley. Known for clay cliffs, good fishing, and the famous Omarama Hot Tubs — outdoor pools overlooking mountains, worth a stop. Also excellent gliding country.

7. Lindis Pass (5.5 hours from Christchurch)

The highest main-road pass in the South Island (971m). The tussock landscapes here look like Scotland crossed with Patagonia. No facilities, but worth stopping for photographs and the silence. In winter, it can be icy — check conditions if travelling June-August.

8. Wanaka (6 hours from Christchurch)

Many travellers prefer Wanaka to Queenstown for its more relaxed atmosphere. The lake is stunning, there are excellent restaurants, and Roys Peak (a 3-hour hike with panoramic views) is one of the most rewarding walks in the South Island. Roy’s Peak can be crowded in summer — aim for an early start or visit in shoulder season.

9. Cardrona Valley (6.5 hours from Christchurch)

The scenic route between Wanaka and Queenstown. The Crown Range Road is the highest sealed road in New Zealand. There’s a historic pub in Cardrona that dates to 1863 — stop for a drink if it’s open. The views from the top of the Crown Range are extraordinary.

10. Arrowtown (7 hours from Christchurch)

A gold rush town from the 1860s, beautifully preserved and 20 minutes from Queenstown. The main street has excellent food and boutique shops. In autumn (March-May), the deciduous trees along the Arrow River turn the town into a photographer’s dream. Lake Hayes nearby is peaceful and worth a walk around.

Practical Notes

All of these stops are on or near State Highway 8 or close detours from it. The route is well-sealed with good facilities. Freedom camping options are excellent throughout — Lake Tekapo, the Mackenzie Basin, and the Lindis Pass area all have sites for self-contained vehicles.

Pick up your van in Christchurch, take 5-7 days for this route, and you’ll arrive in Queenstown having seen some of the best scenery the South Island has to offer.
