Christchurch is the starting point for most South Island campervan adventures — and if you’re hiring from Campervanz Rentals, it’s where you pick up your van. Here’s everything you need to know about hiring a campervan in Christchurch, from what to expect at pickup to where to go first.
Why Hire From Christchurch?
Christchurch is the South Island’s largest city and its main hub for domestic and international flights. Christchurch Airport is modern, easy to navigate, and about 15 minutes from the city centre. If you’re arriving in New Zealand and heading to the South Island, Christchurch is the logical starting point for a campervan trip.
Within 90 minutes of Christchurch you have the Southern Alps, the Banks Peninsula, and the first of many stunning backcountry roads. Within 3 hours, you can be at Lake Tekapo — one of the most photographed places in New Zealand. The city sits at the top of the South Island road network, which means you can head in almost any direction and find something worth stopping for.
What to Expect at Pickup
At Campervanz Rentals, pickup involves a full walkthrough of the van. Ernesto (the owner) shows you everything: how the solar system works, how to fill fresh water, how to empty grey water, how to connect and disconnect the gas, how the hot water works, and what to do if something unexpected happens on the road.
Most people feel confident after about 30-45 minutes. If you have questions later, you can WhatsApp Ernesto directly — he typically responds within the hour.
What’s Included in Every Van
All vans are fully equipped for off-grid travel. You don’t need to bring or buy anything extra for everyday life on the road:
- Solar panels and house battery bank (runs fridge, lighting, charging for days without sun)
- 12V fridge/freezer
- Hot water system
- Gas cooker (2 burners)
- Pots, pans, utensils, plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery
- Comfortable bed with quality linen and pillows
- Camping table and two chairs
- 230V inverter (charge laptops, camera batteries, etc.)
- First aid kit and fire extinguisher
The van is self-contained certified — meaning it’s legally allowed to freedom camp on public land throughout New Zealand.
Where to Go First From Christchurch
The most popular first night for Campervanz guests is usually Lake Tekapo (about 3 hours south). It’s a straightforward highway drive, the lake is absolutely stunning, and there are several good campsite options including freedom camping spots with the right certification.
Other good first-night options include: Hanmer Springs (2 hours north), Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula (1.5 hours), or Kaikōura (2.5 hours north along the coast). All are easy drives from Christchurch and have good camping nearby.
Christchurch Tips Before You Leave
Do your supermarket shop in Christchurch before you set off. The Pak’nSave on Moorhouse Ave is the cheapest, New World is more central. Stock up properly — in smaller South Island towns, supermarkets are small and expensive. Also fill up with fuel: Christchurch has the cheapest petrol prices you’ll see for a while.
