One of the most common enquiries we get is: “What’s actually included?” It’s a fair question – the campervan hire industry has a long history of advertising a base rate and then adding mandatory extras at pickup. Here’s the complete list of what comes with a Campervanz Rentals van, with no omissions.
Sleeping
- Comfortable bed (fixed, not a fold-out) with quality mattress
- Duvet and duvet cover
- Two pillows and pillowcases
- Fitted sheet
- Two bath towels
You don’t need to bring bedding or towels. The bed is made up and ready for your first night.
Kitchen and Cooking
- 2-burner LPG gas cooker
- LPG gas bottle (filled at pickup, with guidelines on typical usage)
- Pots and pans (2 saucepans, 1 frying pan)
- Plates, bowls, mugs (for 2)
- Cutlery set
- Chopping board and knife
- Tin opener, bottle opener, corkscrew
- Washing up bowl, dish brush, and biodegradable dish soap
- Kitchen paper and a tea towel
Power and Refrigeration
- Solar panels (roof-mounted, minimum 200W)
- House battery bank (large capacity lithium or AGM – runs the fridge and lighting for multiple days without sun)
- 12V fridge/freezer (runs continuously on house battery)
- 230V inverter for charging laptops, cameras, and other devices
- USB charging points inside the van
You do not need to stay at a powered campsite. The solar system is designed to handle normal use (fridge, lighting, device charging) indefinitely in normal South Island weather. In very cloudy stretches, the fridge runs for 2-3 days on battery alone before needing any recharge.
Water and Bathroom
- Fresh water tank (filled at pickup, with refill points throughout NZ)
- Hot water system (runs on gas)
- Grey water tank (catches sink drain – self-contained certified)
- Cassette toilet or composting toilet (self-contained certified)
- Biodegradable toilet chemicals where applicable
- Small shower (available in most vans – confirm at booking)
Outdoor Equipment
- Camping table (folds flat for storage)
- Two camping chairs
- Outdoor mat
- Small broom for cleaning sand and dirt out of the van
Safety Equipment
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- CO and smoke detector
- Reflective triangle
- Jump leads (most vans)
Navigation and Information
- Printed South Island map
- Campervanz route suggestions sheet (Ernesto’s personal recommendations)
- List of best free campsites for your intended route
- Van manual and emergency contact card
What’s NOT Included
To be completely transparent:
- Food and drink
- Fuel
- Activity tickets and entrance fees
- Campsite fees (many campsites are free for self-contained vehicles; paid sites are on you)
- Personal toiletries (bring your own shampoo, soap, etc.)
That’s it. No mandatory insurance excess waiver at pickup, no linen hire charge, no cleaning fee for normal use. The price you agree at booking is the price you pay.
