One-Way Campervan Rental in NZ: How It Works

One-way campervan rental – picking up in one city and dropping off in another – is a popular option in New Zealand. Here’s how it works, what it costs, and whether it’s right for your trip.

How One-Way Campervan Rental Works in NZ

With a one-way rental, you pick up the van from the hire company’s base and return it to a different location at the end of your trip. In New Zealand, the most common one-way routes are:

  • Christchurch to Auckland (South Island up through the North Island, or fly Christchurch to Auckland and drop off)
  • Auckland to Christchurch
  • Christchurch to Queenstown
  • Queenstown to Christchurch

One-Way Rentals at Campervanz Rentals

Campervanz Rentals is based in Christchurch. One-way arrangements are possible – we can discuss dropoff options in Queenstown or other South Island locations. For cross-Cook Strait routes (South Island to North Island), contact us to discuss logistics.

The availability and cost of one-way rentals depends on our fleet positioning – sometimes a one-way works well for us logistically, and we can offer it at little or no extra cost. Other times it’s more complex. The best approach is to contact us directly with your dates and intended route.

One-Way vs Return: Which Is Better?

Return rental: You pick up and drop off at the same location. Simpler, usually cheaper, no deadheading costs. Works well if you’re exploring a single island thoroughly – which is what most 2-3 week trips do.

One-way rental: You see more of the country in a single trip. Better if you’re on a tight timeline and want to move in one direction. Can add a relocation fee depending on the provider.

For most South Island trips of 10-21 days, a return rental from Christchurch makes more sense – the South Island has enough to fill that time without needing to get to Auckland.

The North Island vs South Island Question

Most first-time visitors ask: should I do both islands? The honest answer: if you have less than 3 weeks, do one island properly rather than rushing through both. The South Island has the highest density of spectacular scenery, but the North Island (Rotorua geothermal, Coromandel, Northland) is also excellent.

If you have 3-4 weeks, a full trip covering both islands by campervan is one of the best road trips in the world – picking up in Auckland, driving south, crossing the Cook Strait by ferry, exploring the South Island, and flying out of Christchurch (or vice versa).

The Interislander Ferry

Crossing between islands by campervan means taking the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry between Picton (South Island) and Wellington (North Island). The crossing takes 3-3.5 hours and campervans are taken as vehicle cargo. You can book online – book in advance in peak season. Cost is around -350 NZD for a vehicle and driver one-way.
